ocmi2000 : Expedition Years

In 2000 the Ocean Institute moved into temporary facilities- The Expedition will be a scientific encampment complete with two large tent-structures housing labs and teaching functions, three portable buildings housing the gift shop, visitor services and administrative functions, all organized and presented in the theme of a scientific expedition. The rich teaching environment will include research equipment on loan from Scripp's Institution of Oceanography, our juvenile gray whale skeleton 'Graysea' and marine science specimens collected from all of the world's oceans. When complete in early 2002, the Ocean Education Center will be the first-ever marine field station designed to be operated exclusively for students learning about marine science and ocean conservation. The new facilities were carefully designed to strengthen the Ocean Institute's core mission - the conduct of field study programs in support of the school classroom curriculum. The new center will increase the number of students served from 68,000 to 135,000 annually and provide unique opportunities for students to become research scientists, oceanographers and explorers - conducting experiments, collecting and recording data utilizing scientific equipment and participating in cooperative research projects.
