2003 : NSF Grant - Sea Floor Science
2003 July 7,- Ocean Institute Receives National Science Foundation Grant
The Ocean Institute in Dana Point has received a $863,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for an exhibition that makes current sea floor science accessible to thousands of teachers, students, families and general visitors. Over the next three years, an exciting new Sea Floor Science exhibition will allow visitors to become involved in active research on ancient climates, underwater earthquakes, tsunamis, deep-sea archaeology and animal adaptations to extreme environments. The project concept has been tested over the last nine months with three research partners, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Jet Propulsion Lab and Texas A&M's Institute of Nautical Archaeology. Visitors have enjoyed testing ice-boring robots in a 16' Ice Tower, jumping up and down to test the sensitivity of a deep-sea earthquake detector and operating an ROV (remote-operated underwater vehicle) in the Oceanographic Test Tank.
