In Depth: Ocean and Earth Sciences

While all 60 of our educational field trips are excellent, it’s our Top 10 Overnights that have made us famous. There's just something about waking up below the decks of a historic tall ship or anchored in a quiet cove on Catalina Island or in a cabin by a babbling mountain stream that helps combine standards-based curriculum with the building of life-long memories. The Ocean Institute – where experience is the teacher!

Middle School

RV Sea ExplorerSea Floor Explorer Overnight

Grades 6 - 8
Students investigate plate tectonics and sea floor geology. In the evening, students participate in activities focusing on coring/paleoclimatology, underwater seismology, hydrothermal vent communities, underwater archaeology, and technology used in the deep sea. They also design/test their own ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and operate their vehicle in several challenges. In the morning aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, students retrieve a core sample and sieve the core for microfossils, survey the seafloor with a side-scan sonar and operate our SeaBotix ROV. Program concludes in a roundtable discussion on the topics they have explored throughout the program.

Sea Floor Lab/Cruise Combo

Grades 6 - 8
Students investigate plate tectonics, sea floor geology, sediment cores, microfossils, test ROVs and underwater seismicity. Aboard the R/V Sea Explorer students retrieve a core sample and sieve the sediment for microfossils, survey the seafloor with a side-scan sonar and operate our SeaBotix ROV.

Earth Science Field Program

Grades 6 - 8
Students identify igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, measure the dip of an uplifted sea floor, map an inactive fault, monitor a sea floor seismometer, and use math skills to predict the future seismic split of California.

Advanced Living Systems Lab/Cruise Combo

Grades 7 - 12
Explore the relationship between biotic and abiotic components of the marine ecosystem. This lab includes a fish dissection, water chemistry, invertebrate classification, and moon jelly biology. Aboard the R/V Sea Explorer students examine benthic and pelagic habitats by deploying oceanographic sampling equipment to collect a variety of marine specimens.

Advanced Floating Laboratory

Grades 9 - College
Student oceanographers apply sampling and research protocols for water chemistry and biological monitoring. The course is flexible and can be modified to meet individual teacher requests. For advanced students an optional research component can be added as students participate in benthic fish counts, chlorophyll productivity analysis and current measurements. Equipment available includes an otter trawl net, plankton net, Peterson grab sampler, Van Veen grab sampler, Van Dorn bottles, a new bioacoustic array, side-scan sonar, CTD water analyzer, and a meteorological station.

Advanced Island Ecology Safari

Grades 9 - 12
Students focus on the complex relationships that develop within island ecosystems through both natural and human-related processes. Studies include classifying native and introduced plant communities, determining fish populations through catch-and-release fishing or snorkeling, exploring a mudflat ecosystem, and applying oceanographic research protocols to define the marine environment surrounding the island. The course is flexible and can be modified to meet individual teacher requests. For advanced students an optional research component can be added as students participate in benthic fish counts, chlorophyll productivity analysis and current measurements.
