"Carry On, Mr. Bowditch" Overnight
Grades 4-5
Based on the award winning novel, "Carry On Mr. Bowditch" by Jean Lee Latham
Eighteen hours, $2750 for up to 45 participants
During the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, the United States struggled in vain to build
an economy as Barbary Pirates, French Privateers and the British Navy fed
off the heavily laden American trade ships. Following the example set
by Nathanial Bowditch, students role-play as desperate job seekers
from Salem, Massachusetts recreating a one-year Mediterranean
voyage aboard the brig Pilgrim or the schooner Spirit of Dana Point.
In order to "survive" the turbulent life at sea and earn their pay,
students must quickly learn how to navigate, defend and maintain
their ship, trade with foreign ports, and handle the rigging and sails.
